Oops… She’s a He!

Yup, one of our chookies is a he… I realised it about three days after we brought them here, and my sister in law texted me about it that same night. Three days after that he started crowing, at 4.41, 5.01, 5.21, 6.13 and that’s when I gave up trying to sleep! I can’t believe that in catching them and clipping their wings neither of us realised! Doh!!!

So we’re trying to find a home for him where he’ll have some girls to look after, and I may have found someone who wants him through Freecycle. We’ve bought another hen, (definately a hen!) from a breeder here, she’s a young point of lay Hy-line pullet. So far this week we’ve had one egg from her, that Dian ate for lunch, and an egg without a shell. Interesting…. hopefully she’ll start laying more proper eggs soon.

Chookies!!!!

We brought home our two temporary chooks today! They’re on loan from my sister in law, and we take them back at Christmas. I can’t imagine an interstate move with chooks!

The larger brown one is named Betty, and the smaller black/brown one is named Boo. Betty Boo…. Dian named them. The pic was taken about fifteen minutes after being put into their run, they have since totally denuded the grass and stripped all the leaves off the weeds. Insatiable eating machines these things… The run they are in is a narrow strip up between the garage and the fence. They’ll be locked in there for a few days to a week, to get used to roosting in the shelter there, and after that we’ll start letting them out into the backyard during the day.
